Samsung HPT4254 42-Inch Plasma HDTV Review

I’ve owned this set for about 10 months now, and it never ceases to amaze me with its picture and ease of use. Simply put, it’s an outstanding HDTV, especially for the price.

The color is what strikes me first. It’s drastically better than almost every LCD set I’ve come across that’s been below ,000. In general, plasma tv’s produce better color output than LCD’s, so that in and of itself isn’t really surprising. What IS surprising, though, is just how much more vivid a picture this set has than almost all LCD’s and plasmas anywhere remotely in and out of its price range. My dad paid twice as much for his 40″ LCD 1080p, and all he does is comment on how pretty my tv looks everytime he comes over. Same with a close friend of mine who also owns an LCD that cost more than twice as much. I never realized how beautiful reds, yellows, blues, and greens were until I got this set. Yellow has become my new favorite color, strangely enough, because it looks so bloody brilliant on this set. Bumblebee from Transformers blows my mind every time I watch it. It’s absolutely beautiful.

In terms of clarity, it’s again a stunning product. Blu-Rays shine on this set, and I’m constantly showing off Transformers and Planet Earth to the delight of my friends. Also, the contrast on this plasma outshines any and all LCD screens I’ve tried out, too.

I can’t comment on the sound because I use my surround sound set-up at all times, but the three or four times I’ve utilized the factory speakers, they’ve been fine.

My only major gripe is that the factory remote doesn’t have preset buttons for each of the input selections. There’s only one button, and you have to cycle through the input types until you reach your desired destination. I ended up purchasing the Harmony One remote which already has those inputs programmed in. Sweet!

The only other concern I have had is screen burn-in, which has happened on occasion. I’m fairly mindful of it and whatever burn-in my tv has received has always worn off after an hour or so, but I imagine if you play video games with HUDs on them for many many hours at a time, this could become an issue. I haven’t had any problems with my games (all three of the “next gen” systems look and play great on this thing), but I am not as hardcore a gamer as I used to be.

Overall, this set is dynamically beautiful, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a fantastic picture that will wow you and your friends and family for years to come.

Samsung HPT4254 42-Inch Plasma HDTV Specifications

Offering a rich feature set and exceptional quality for its price, Samsung HPT4254 42-inch 720p plasma TV uses the company’s latest DNIe enhancement circuitry to deliver outstanding brightness, contrast, and image clarity. Use it for home theater and use it for your PC–it’s perfect for both. In addition to a standard-broadcast NTSC tuner, it also features an integrated ATSC tuner that can capture over-the-air digital broadcasts from local network affiliates (the set will still require a set-top tuner for receiving non-terrestrial HD broadcasts from channels like HBO or Discovery). Other noteworthy features include a 60,000 hour panel life, Samsung’s unique auto pixel-shifting technology to prevent burn-in, a gaming mode, cinema progressive film mode, and 3 HDMI connections. This model is also compatible with an Auto wall-mount Samsung will release this year that is controllable in 3-dimensions via the HTDV’s own remote control.

While the HP-T4254 Samsung’s entry level 720p plasma for 2007, it differs from the step-up HP-T4264 on in the cosmetic design, and the lack of a USB2.0 connection. Both models offer the same high level of digital image processing, 15,000:1 contrast ratio, and HDMI connectivity. If you want a USB connction for playing photo files or MP3s, check out the HPT4264.

The Samsung Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe) Video Enhancer refines all analog NTSC and wideband video inputs for an overall improvement in picture quality. DNIe improves contrast, white level, picture detail and incorporates digital noise reduction to improve lower quality video inputs. Thanks to the new 13-bit processing capability of DNIe, the HP-S4253 can produce over 549 billion colors (compared to the one billion colors that TVs with 10-bit processing can produce.

Single-tuner Picture in Picture
This HDTV has a picture-in-picture feature, but it only has a single tuner which does not allow POP to function n the same mode. For example, you can’t watch one TV channel in the main screen and another channel in the PIP screen. You can watch a tv channel in one screen and view contnet from your computer or a DVD in another. This tends to be the functional limitation of PIP in most HDTVs currently available.

Samsung 42-inch plasma TV – B. Mann Jr. – Dunstable, MA United States
Great TV! Arrived quickly. Looks great, wonderful picture (720p is eye-popping), adequate sound from the built-in speakers, swivels generously on the included stand. Like other plasma TVs, it does generate a fair amount of heat, but in the cold Northeast this time of year, that’s a bonus.

Great TV, I love it! – WRP –
I did all sorts of research on the internet for weeks before I purchased this TV. I have had this TV since 2007 and I couldn’t have made a better choice for me. The colors are stunning and the audio is great. The only thing that I didn’t take into consideration was the possibility of burn ins. I once left a DVD menu on and fell asleep. 8 hours later I woke up and was freaking out. I ran the wipe out mode while I was at work for 8 1/2 hours and when I came back, there was no burn in. Occasionally if you have a channel on the logo might appear on the screen slightly when you turn off the tv, but it’s nothing to worry about, it goes away, trust me, I watch A TON of tv shows and movies. I also have HDMI out from my computer to my TV and it looks awesome, never had a problem with burn ins in that area either. Overall, I’d recommend this TV to anyone, honestly. Don’t freak out about burn ins if that is your main worry, the picture quality is so much better than DLP and LCD in my opinion, it’s totally worth it.

Went off exactly after one year – V. Sankaran –
I bought this TV last August from Best Buy and two days before it went off. I hear a click sound when I turn on, but nothing comes up. I even use a surge protector power supply.
I used to have TVs lasting more than 20 years, but I am surprised to see this Big Brand TV going off in just one year. Unfortunately, I didnt buy the extended warranty. The charges towards fixing this issue seems to be around 40% of TV cost. I called up Samsung also if they can help with my problem. They told the same story what Best Buy told me, that fix up an appointment with technical engineer and I need to bear the whole cost, as I am out of Warranty. But they keep their mouth shout, when I ask why did this fault happen.

So Beware of this problem, before buying this TV. I am totally disappointed with purchasing this TV.

Samsung DVD-HD841 Up-Converting DVD Player Review

Earlier this week I received the factory referbished Samsung HD841. I have had a few days to use it and compare it to my other players, mainly my Philips 642, which have been excellent players for me. This Model does well. I don’t understand why this model has such a rough reveiw. Note, this model has the DVI output, If your TV has an HDMI port, you will want to check out the Samsung HD 850 (identical otherwise). First, this model has component, composite and S-video hook ups, as well as the DVI port (still have to run seperate sound out with DVI). Also, this model does feature digital coax sound out and optical sound out as well for systems that can handle 5.1 THX. Many upconvert models do not have the digital outs on lower priced models. The picture quality is great, at 480p comparable with my Philips. Again, The upconvert works well out the DVI hook up to my TV, but to be honest, it is hard to tell any difference between it and a good 480p progressive scan player, at least on my tv which is a 23″ 720p LCD. Menus also are a bit difficult to figure out at first as well. The user manual is less than impressive at explaining thing, in fact, it does not have an index. But, it the main thing is that the player is does perform well, and is a name brand product from samsung (I have had some offbrand experience and have had perfomace problems). THis player also appears to have DivX available on it, not noted in the product discription, so that was a suprise as well. This will allow the use of MP4 movie files. The remote again is bigger and at first more difficult than my other players, but after a day or so it actually is better because many of the features are available to change at the push of a button instread of going through the menus. In all, I will continue to explore this new player, but in all it seems to be a quality product that has received some bad flack. So give it a chane, the prices are good currently, quality has been good, and it is a Samsung.
Note to the technosavy: I have not had luck using the component upconvert code that is available on other web sites, so I am using my DVI input for upconvert. Also, the new Blue ray (HD 1080p) DVD players are out, so if you have the expensive hi res tvs that can handle this, you might want to wait and save till you can get the new DVD players.
Note 2: the factory referbished models come with a DVI cable, a 20-30 dollar value that many don’t come with.

Samsung DVD-HD841 Up-Converting DVD Player Feature

  • 720p, 768p, and 1080i upconversion from conventional DVD-Video images (for use with high-definition and HD-ready TVs)
  • High-resolution audio performance with Super Audio CD (SACD) and DVD-Audio decoding
  • DVI digital video output with cable
  • EZ View letterbox eliminator
  • Includes remote control

Samsung DVD-HD841 Up-Converting DVD Player Overview

Samsung’s HD841 is a must for anyone with an HDTV display. It converts to hi def standard DVDs from 480i to HDTV-level 720p or 1080i resolution right at the source. By up-converting content in the DVD player – rather than several steps away in the TV – the HD841 creates HDTV-level images that have fewer artifacts and less noise than with other hi def conversion methods. Then it sends that HD signal directly to your TV through a purely digital DVD output – with no analog conversion.

Samsung DVD-HD841 Up-Converting DVD Player Specifications

Samsung’s DVD-HD841 delivers scintillating video and audio performance at an eye-popping price. Between the unit’s progressive-scan component-video and DVI digital-video outputs, sophisticated high-definition upconversion (from 480i/p DVD-Video to 720p, 768p, or 1080i, depending on your HDTV), and processing abilities for the audio-only SACD (Super Audio CD) and DVD-Audio formats, this player quite nearly does it all.

The DVD-HD841 has a built-in video scaler that permits output to a HDTV.

Samsung’s video upconversion technology eliminates visible scan lines and artifacts arising from interlaced video and the 3:2 pulldown process required to render film-based movies as NTSC video. The result: higher resolution from conventional sources and sharper images with few motion artifacts. The player’s DVI digital-video output may be used for lossless video transmission between the player and compatible TVs and computer monitors.

Superior Sound
SACD and DVD-Audio media both offer super-high-fidelity sound. DVD-Audio discs provide 192 kHz/24-bit multichannel and stereo sound, high storage capacity, and unique bonus materials not available on regular audio CDs. These discs often have compressed Dolby Digital soundtracks for listening on standard DVD players, but true DVD-A decoding is required for full sonic appreciation. Depending on the disc, Sony’s proprietary SACD format provides multichannel and/or stereo sound, often presented in a dual-layer format compatible with both standard CD players (at standard resolution) and SACD-equipped players like the DVD-HD841 (for full-resolution playback).

As an antipiracy measure, the DVD-HD841 performs its own decoding of both DVD-Audio and SACD signals, passing high-resolution analog, not digital, audio to your integrated amplifier or surround receiver. This means you’ll need an audio/video receiver with multichannel analog-audio inputs to appreciate multichannel DVD-A and SACD releases.

Enjoy peerless multichannel, surround-sound audio from DVD-Audio and SACD media.

A set of stereo and a set of multichannel analog-audio outputs route audio from DVD-A/SACD media as well as from Dolby Digital- and DTS-encoded DVDs to your AV receiver. If you’re not planning to use the DVD-A/SACD capability for multichannel programming, both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player’s digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for simpler connection with your receiver.

Another handy feature is the player’s EZ View letterbox eliminator, which lets you enjoy full-screen pictures on 4:3 aspect-ratio TVs–even when you’re watching widescreen DVDs. Composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.

What’s in the Box
DVD player, remote control, remote batteries, user’s manual, DVI digital video interconnect, stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable, and warranty information.

upconverting – W. Cunningham – san mateo
I just pulled this out of storage to use as a an analog cd player for a new(for me) vintage marantz receiver that arrived today, I see a lot of complaints about the up converting abilities of this unit but as I recall when I used it last it only upconverted if using a dvi cable and as I recall this was not pointed out very clearly in the instuctions once I changed cables it was almost as good as the hd I was getting from comcast cable but I would say 75 percent better then 480

Eh…it’s okay… – Ytsejamer1 – Portsmouth, NH United States
Just as a note, the DTS skipping problem I was able to resolve by updating the firmware on the unit. You can download the firmware from Samsung’s site. After that, DTS sound worked great and I didn’t have anymore skipping.

The problem I have is that it doesn’t seem to want to output Dolby Digital to my receiver…it’s sending a signal that gets detected as Dolby Pro Logic by my receiver which auto-detects the correct surround format. It’s not my receiver as my comcast box sends out digital 5.1 and the receiver detects it correctly.

This dvd player has been okay, but it’s just clunky. I haven’t had too many problems with the remote and not had any problems with the display. It works on par with any DVD player, but nothing special.

When you can buy an Oppo-Digital DVD player for about the same price or lower, it just doesn’t make much sense.

To Use DVI you must have HDCP compliant TV\Monitor – John Alim Usman – Auburn, AL. 36830
I had difficulty with this unit. It would play DVD’s I made myself, but not any store bought DVD’s through the DVI Cable. I called up Samsung support and found out that unless your TV is HDCP compliant then it will not play store bought DVD’s through the DVI Cable. This unit only up converts through the DVI cable, so unless your TV\Monitor is HDCP compliant, do not expect it to work properly. (HDCP is a copy protection built into your hardware to prevent copying of the Movie).

Good Product – M. Standal – Durango, CO.
I purchased this player for around 70 bucks shipped from an Ebay vendor last week. It was packaged as a recondition and arrived with new remote batteries and a DVI cable to boot. It was easy to setup with my Westinghouse 37inch LCD using DVI cable provided. I am no expert, but the picture looked fine to me and appeared to look sharper than an older non-upscaling DVD player we have for the old tube tv. With output settings at 1080I for the LCD and the HD841 it looked very good. I use a Harmony 880 remote for everything, so I cannot comment on the included remote.

I think this was a resonable choice to fill the gap until HD discs and players come down in price and become more commonplace.

BP96-01073A ORIGINAL LAMP FOR SAMSUNG TV Review

BP96-01073A ORIGINAL LAMP FOR SAMSUNG TV

The product works great and provides a very sharp high quality HDTV picture. It is easy to install and comes with easy to understand directions. The one that came with my DLP Samsung TV lasted eight years before failing. I recommend purchasing this part before your current lamp fails because you will loose the use of your HDTV until you replace the lamp, the cost of parts will rise and availability may decline.

I purchased a DLP HDTV instead of Plasma TV because at the time I bought it; I was told once the plasma TV fail you might as well discard it and with the DLP all you had to do was replace the lamp. I was told the lamp should last about five years depending on the use. I work from 2PM-10PM and my wife work from 7AM-3PM, therefore we could have an above normal usage.

TV’s bright again! – Terry H. Jung – Maryland, USA
I’ll cut to the chase.

1. Easy installation
2. Great value, considering that I don’t have to buy a new TV for another 3-4 years
3. Just like the original

No complaints what-so-ever. I actually bought it and replaced the lamp on my parents’ TV. They called yesterday to thank me… They were enjoying watching a hi def movie on their 56″ TV with a bright screen.

Lamp for Samsung – Lauren G. Getchell – Poulsbo, WA USA
this product was easy to installed after reviewing the video on line. Also a great price.

Samsung DLP lamp replacement – Careful Consumer –
Lamp replacement was received in a very timely manner. It was supposed to include the housing but was only the lamp. It took some time, but was easy due to the references packed with the lamp. The seller was notified, by phone, that the replacement did not include the housing and the additional charges for the housing should be credited. He looked up the order and immediately gave a refund. Except for this error, which might mean that quality control is lacking, I am pleased with the purchase.

didn’t fit into plug – Jackie Hargis –
worked great but had to change lamp to old carriage, the plugs didn’t match up. Also the wiring is real loose.Tv is working for now.

A Lot of Hot Air! – S. Hochman – Boca Raton, FL United States
We recently got DirecTV after seeing their ad blitz for 75 HD channels. They brag about their “digital picture and sound,” and their great customer service.
The truth is the only way to get digital picture and sound is with a HDTV and an HDMI. Their picture is actually worse than the picture we got with Comcast. Not to mention there is no two year agreement with cable, no picture loss when it rains, you do not have to pay for “leased equipment, and you do not need an ugly dish hanging on your house.
When we purchased our most recent HDTV, we figured we would replace the DVR we had with DirecTV and get an HD DVR to replace it.
DirecTV told us we would have to pay 9 for the privlige of leasing their receiver from them. In addition to this we would have to pay because we were a new customer “and had not established a credit history with them.” Also, we would have to pay for shipping and handling and extend our contract for another two years.
Maybe DirecTV thinks it is in the cellphone business because all they want to do is lock you into long-term contracts and make you bleed money to them forever. Their symbol should be a ball and chain because that is what they really are. Cable here I come!

HDMI does not work – Aziz Laurent – Austin TX
I had to return the unit because the HDMI did not give a signal. The rest of the video outputs worked occasionally. It is ashame that the choices for Directv is limited to only one unit.
