Magnavox DVD Player, MWD200G Review

Ordered and have used it at work many times. Ive read other review saying that it dosent last as long as other ones, but considering the other dvd players cost a lot more and some of them you can’t set the regional settings on, this is a cheap but very effective player for the money. If it dies in a year or 2 who cares, you bought it for 30 bucks anyways lol. Considering I’m spending 80 dollars on gas every 2 weeks I figure 30 bucks for a year of movie watching aint to shabby.

Didn’t even last 90 days – Dena A. Bell – Nashville, TN United States
I bought this dvd player on 11/30/09. Two days ago is stopped playing dvds, it wouldn’t eject the dvd and now it no longer works. Thank goodness I have a week to return it and get my money back. yo Magnavox you can’t make a simple dvd player last longer than 90 days!!

Cheap and not cheerful – Jaimie Mancham-case –
OK, so this dvd player is cheap so you can’t expect too much. However, I didn’t expect to see a blue screen everytime I put a disc in and have to turn the player on and off numerous times and take the disc in and out until it played. So not worth it. Spend an extra and get a player that actually works and will last!!

worth the money – E. Hofelich – highland heights, ky USA
Hey, this is a good dvd player. its very quiet so you have to turn the volume WAY up compared to regular tv volume. the price is right and it’s a good product. go for it.

Good while it lasted… – E. Lustig – Duluth, MN
I got this as a Christmas gift from some friends after my last DVD player gave up it’s ghost. It’s now July…about 7 months later…and this player is dead already. It was fine up until a week ago, where you had to open/close the DVD tray several times to make it read a DVD. Now it won’t recognize any disc at all. Sure, it’s cheap…but only lasting half a year is still too short for any kind of product to be considered a good buy – at least in my opinion.

OPPO DV-970HD Up-Converting Universal DVD Player Review

I have had this recorder for about a year. I unplugged it one day to vacuum and after that, I kept getting a “no disc” message. I tried the remedy suggested in the instruction booklet and I got it to work one more time, but after that, I kept getting the error message. Of course, it is now out of warranty and I would have to pay for it to be repaired. I was very disappointed as I am the only one here and did not use it very often. It was in the cabinet where it was protected, so I felt its life was rather short-lived for the money spent.

OPPO DV-970HD Up-Converting Universal DVD Player Feature

  • Up-converts standard DVD to 720p/1080i high definition output via HDMI (6ft HDMI cable included); Progressive-scan component output
  • Pure and clean 480i NTSC / 576i PAL over HDMI ideal for external video processor/scaler or high end display
  • Official DivX Certified product, plays all versions of DivX video (including DivX 6) with standard playback of DivX media files
  • DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, Super Audio CD (SACD), XviD, Audio CD, HDCD, Kodak Picture CD, WMA and other digital audio and video media/formats
  • Excellent audio performance with Dolby Digital, DTS, Coaxial and Optical digital output, HDMI 1.1 multi-channel audio, 5.1ch and stereo analog output

OPPO DV-970HD Up-Converting Universal DVD Player Overview

OPPO Digital’s DV-970HD was developed following the success of the OPDV971H, the award-winning upconverting DVD player which scored the highest against hundreds of brands and models in independent DVD player benchmark tests. With experience garnered from the OPDV971H and insightful input from the A/V enthusiast community, OPPO packs the DV-970HD with high performance and enthusiast grade features, all at an incredible value. Today’s traditional DVDs and DVD players are intended for low resolution, standard definition televisions. The DV-970HD, designed for every HDTV owner, up-converts standard DVD to high-definition signal, producing clearer, smoother, and crisper video on HDTV and projectors. Its HDMI output ensures a pure, straight digital path for video and audio. In addition to its up-conversion feature, the DV-970HD can output a native 480i/576i resolution over HDMI, making it an incredible digital transport for use with high-end video processors or scalers. Featuring a stylish, slim, and modern design, the DV-970HD includes an integrated 4-in-1 flash memory card reader to allow viewers to enjoy their digital pictures and music. It also offers a USB interface for expanded connectivity. The DV-970HD is one of the most versatile players on the market, providing support for DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, Super Audio CD (SACD), DVD+/-RW and CD-R/RW. It is also compatible with DivX(R) video, XviD, Audio CD, HDCD, Kodak Picture CD, WMA and other digital audio and video media formats. The DV-970HD supports NTSC or PAL disc and television systems. As video is only part of the equation, the DV-970HD also features excellent audio with Dolby Digital surround sound and Pro Logic II decoding. A high-quality certified HDMI cable with gold-plated connectors is included, adding even more value to the already feature-packed product. The OPPO DV-970HD provides most of the performance of the highest-rated OPDV971H, but at a lower price and includes even more features.

Love this thing! – JW – California
I bought this about 4 years ago and it still works great! I gave it to my parents when I upgraded to a dvr but I never had one problem with this and I loved that it could read external hard drives via the USB interface. Awesome product!

BEWARE! Poor Reliability – Poor Customer Service – ElectronicsFAN –
Think twice before buying from Oppo.

I purchased this DV-970HD unit about 2 years ago and in addition – two other units afterwards (2 are newer models). The other 2 units are working (1 I own and the other I gave as a present). For the 970HD, I have used it <10 times as it is not conected to my primary AV system (in the bedroom). However, this past weekend it quit operating and won't read any disks. It just says "no disk" with any disk I put into it.

I called customer care regarding trying a firmware upgrade or any type of resets that might help and was told by their rep “Mason” (he later told me that he is their Technical Service Manager) that there is nothing I can do as it won’t read disks (no ability to perform a firmware grade because the disk cannot read it). He then told me that I would need to ship it to him at my expense and then pay for repairs. I expained to him that I have only used this item <10 times and he said that "they don't know that - that this is just my word" (thus, he is saying that he doesn't trust or believe me). I then say I have purchased 2 other units from them and offered to send him proof of these purchases (thus giving him an opportunity to gain trust in what I say) and I also told him that I recommended his company to many others likely giving them more business. I asked, as being a very good customer to Oppo, if he would consider covering all/part of the repair charges. He came back with the same reply - that they have standards to maintain - the 1 year warranty and that there is nothing he can do. I asked him again if he would reconsider and he said no.

I then said that he has left me no choice but to never purchase another Oppo product again, not recommend their product to anyone again and then possibly go onto Amazon.com and give a poor review. He said “there is no chance now that I would grant your request because of a threat”. Puzzled, I asked him if there still was a chance that he would have granted my request??? He then said that “if you would have continued to have a positive discussion with him on my situation that he might have…” (i.e.- kiss his a**). I then said that I am not talking to you here to play games and that he & his company had an opportunity to satisfy/delight a customer or give customer dissatisfaction, and that you made the decision earlier that you wouldn’t help me. I then told him that I will only purchase products from companies that make more reliable products (Sony, Denon, etc…) and would write up this review on Amazon. The final straw for me is what he said in reply to my “threat” (it wasn’t a threat, it was a promise), that if I would have played along and begged him he might have given in (when clearly he made up his mind beforehand, or they company did it for him with their policies and $s they put to customer care). I am mostly disappointed because I liked Oppo and wanted the company to succeed, (more small companies producing good products pushes all companies who make like products to produce better products) but this call from “Mason” completely changed my mind about them.

I think Oppo makes DVD players with good features & performance – WHEN THEY WORK – but question their reliability to the point of not trusting their quality. My experience having 1 out of 3 fail is quite poor – especially the one that was rarely used. By comparison, I have probably purchased over 25 consumer electronic items from Sony, Denon, Panasonic, etc… over the years and have NEVER had one of those products fail.

Bottom line: You get what you pay for. You can save a little upfront with Oppo, but in the end I think you will likely pay more and have greater hassel with repairs and poor customer service (like a rep who plays the “victim” to a perceived threat, but holds an imaginary carrot out there that he will help you if you play his game).

best kept secret in dvd players. – P. Fernandez – Miami,, fl
I got this a year ago, and it’s just wonderful. Both the picture and sound are first class. It replaced a crappy Toshiba player that was the biggest piece of electronic crap I have ever purchased. this is so much better, I swear it makes my dvd’s sound and look better than any other player I have seen. Highly recommended.

VIZIO VX240M 24-Inch Full HD 1080p LCD HDTV Review

As a future college student, I have looked for, researched, and tried out many small HDTV’s to use as a computer monitor/HDTV for my dorm room. The employees at Best Buy stated that if a TV wasn’t over 46 inches big, you couldn’t tell the difference between 1080p and 720p. However, he didn’t know what he was saying. At relatively far distances (i.e. normal watching distance for most TV’s) the difference between 1080p and 720p is small to none. However, from a short distance (like 4 feet for a 42 inch, or 1.5 feet for a 24 inch) you can easily tell the difference in resolution. This is where this T.V. comes in. As a computer monitor, I will be close up to the screen, reading tiny text like the text in this review! Now that the main issue has been sorted out, it’s onto the main review:

Contrast-5000:1 may seem like a big number, but that is only dynamic. Although I couldn’t find the static/typical contrast, it is probably around 900-1000. However, since this set has a relatively low brightness (300 cd/m2), blacks looked blacker than normal, which is a good thing.

Resolution- 1080p…enough said!

Motion- 5 ms means that button presses on any device (like a keyboard or game console) happen with only an unnoticable .05 second delay, which is lightning fast. However, since there is no 120Hz, there will be noticeable motion blur on extremely fast action scenes. This tv is relatively small, so motion blur won’t be a big problem for normal watching and gaming.

Feature Set/Presentation- since this is an ECO HDTV, it uses far less power than previous models, if your into the whole energy saving thing. SRS TruSurround is always a good thing for making movies and other sounds “pop” but when that program is run through 3 Watt speakers, you can’t expect much. The 3D comb filter, now standard with many HDTV’s, helped to put out a wide color scheme; at least that’s what my friends said they saw, I’m colorblind, so color gamut specs really don’t apply to me. The white/black look touches off my 360, but it can only match with so many things.

Overall Value- for a little over 0, you get full 1080p, a relatively “large-small-screen” great for a computer monitor, and the confidence that you got another good HDTV from Vizio.

Hope you liked the review!

It’s great but…. – Peter B. Perkins Jr. – California
This TV is easy to use, has a good array of inputs on the back, and even has a headphone input. My biggest complaint is the light bleed especially the edges. Coupled with Blu-Ray the picture is amazing but when my eyes aren’t attracted to the edges I’m looking at that spot that supposed to be dark but is kind of shiny-ish. If you know what I am talking about and really don’t care then I highly suggest this TV and brand in general for the ease of use and low prices but if you are easily distracted like me you should probably look for something else…

Excellent all around. – Michael W. Bennett – Baltimore, Maryland USA
Delivery was as promised, and the television is wonderful. The picture is great, and my only regret is that I did not purchase a larger screen.

Speaker hiss, logo won’t turn off – Adam J. Richter – Campbell, California USA
When playing digital broadcast television or HDMI digital audio such as from a blu-ray or DVD, the built-in speakers have substantial hiss reminscient of a distant analog television siginal. The headphone jack (the unmarked hole in back of the left edge of the monitor) also has audio static, although the static was only noticible when I used my $[...] Maxell dhp-ii headphones and unnoticible on my $[...] Inland heaphones. I bought one of these televisions at Costco and swapped it out for a replacement due to the audio static, and both units had the same audio static. I work around this by connecting my headphones directly to my blu-ray player and keeping something plugged into the telvision’s headphone jack.

Also, if you are going to use this television as a monitor always playing video-only signals, you should be relieved to know that the audio static apparently does not occur until it is asked to play audio. So, if you are just going to connect the monitor to an HDMI computer video card with no audio, you may never have to deal with the static.

Another drawback you should be aware of is that you need an external AC power switch to get the unit’s logo light to turn off.

Finally a really minor complaint is that selecting VGA input from the remote control requires a multi-key sequence that has a fast enough timeout that I often have to try twice. The other inputs have their own buttons on the remote control, so this problem only applies to VGA, which will become less popular in the future anyhow.

In spite of these drawbacks, if you think of this device as a video-only monitor with a good number of inputs that, as a bonus, includes speakers and a broadcast digital TV tuner that can be used to catch the news occasionally, it is cost competitive with similar computer monitors that have no speakers and no ATSC tuner.
